Dog Has Been Hit By a Car!

Regardless of how hard you try to keep your pet confined or on a leash, it takes just a split-second for them to get outside. If they find their way outside, he can be hit by a car. If your pet escapes and is hit by a car, the first thing that you need to do is stay calm. Your pet needs you to be calm and focused if he is going to pull through. There are a few things that you should do right away to save his life before getting him to East Valley Emergency Pet Care.

Get Them Out Of the Road

The first thing that you need to do is get them out of the road to keep them from being hit again. If they are on a busy street, you need to be careful. You are no good to them if you get hit as well. If it is a busy road, call 911 and wait for the police to stop traffic so they can be taken from the street safely.

If you have a small pet, you should be able to move them yourself. You need to be very gentle because chances are; they are going to have broken bones. They are going to be in pain and scared when you move them, so don't be surprised if they snap at you. To keep from being bitten, wrap a shirt or towel around your hand and arm before moving them. If they are too heavy to move, you may need help from emergency services.

Perform CPR

If your pet isn't breathing and has no heartbeat, you may need to perform CPR. To breathe for them, cover their nostrils with your mouth and blow. You need to breathe hard enough for their check to rise. You need to follow each breath with compression for 30 seconds. For a cat or a small dog, place your hand on their breast bone, putting your thumb on one side and your fingers on the other. Breathe for them 10 times, and perform 100 chest compressions per minute. If they start breathing, you can stop. If not, keep doing CPR until you can get him to the vet.

Get To the Vet Immediately

Even if your pet doesn't seem to be injured, you still need to get them to the vet immediately. They could have internal injuries that could kill them without treatment. They will need a complete workup and diagnostic scans to determine the severity of the injuries.

If your pet is hit by a car, you need to get them to East Valley Emergency Pet Clinic in Diamond Bar immediately. Our emergency veterinarian will provide the best emergency pet care possible to help your pet survive their accident. The sooner you get him to the veterinary hospital, the better their chances are of surviving. You can call us at (909) 861-5737.
