Food Allergies in Your Pet
East Valley Emergency Pet Clinic is located in Diamond Bar and is ready to meet all of your emergency pet care needs. Our veterinary hospital is open after hours to assist in those times that your regular vet is closed. We see many patients with complications due to allergies. Some animals may experience food allergies that can lead to more than just itchy skin and runny eyes.
Food Allergy Symptoms
- Itchy skin and paws
- Runny, red eyes
- Skin rashes and hot spots
- Scaly and/or oily skin, leathery skin, pigmented skin
- Vomiting and diarrhea
- Hair loss
- Chronic ear infections
- Yeast or bacterial infections of the skin or ears
- All of these problems can lead to more serious issues such as stress, anxiety, infections, and wounds that won't heal. It is imperative to treat and diagnose a food allergy early on to avoid further complications.
Diagnosing a Food Allergy
The most effective way to diagnosing a food allergy takes some time. Putting a pet on a simple elimination diet over a period of weeks can narrow down what specific food or food product is causing an animal’s symptoms. This will entail taking your pet off all foods and then adding things back in to discover what causes the reaction. You can also obtain a commercial skin or blood allergy test to check for allergens, but sometimes these aren't accurate and can be much more costly than restricting what your pet eats on a day to day basis.
