Preventing Bloat in Dogs

Tips to Reduce the Likelihood of Bloat in Dogs

Bloat in dogs, which is also known as gastric dilation or GDV, can quickly lead to a dog's death. Bloat occurs when the stomach fills with fluid or gas, which can also cause a dog's stomach to twist around. If you suspect your pet has bloat, it is critical you bring him in for emergency vet care.

The following are all signs of bloat. If you notice these symptoms in your dog, you should see your veterinarian right away.

  • Distended stomach
  • The stomach feels hard to the touch
  • The dog is retching, but no vomit is coming out
  • The dog cries in pain when you touch his stomach
  • The dog is restless and pacing back and forth
  • Excess drooling

There are a few steps you can take to help reduce the likelihood of GDV.

Diet Can Reduce the Likelihood of Bloat

While there is no specific food you can feed your dog to avoid bloat, it is critical to look at the ingredients in your pets' food, as certain ingredients can increase the risk of bloat. For example, if the first few ingredients in your dog's food are soy or oil, you should avoid it, as those ingredients have been shown to increase the risk of bloat.

Feed Your Dog Twice a Day

Studies have shown that dogs that eat two meals a day are much less likely to develop bloat. To reduce the chance of bloat, you should feed your dog two smaller meals a day.

Make Sure Your Dog Doesn't Eat Too Fast

It has been shown that dogs that eat fast are five times more likely to develop bloat than others. One way to slow your dog down is by feeding him with a slow feeder bowl. These bowls are designed a bit like a maze, and it takes a dog more time to finish his food from one.
