Is Your Pet Over-Indulging This Season?

Is Your Pet Over Indulging This Winter in Diamond Bar, CA?

This is a time of year when many pets can easily over indulge, especially in homes where guests are staying and feasts are being made. Sometimes at the holidays, pets can even be fed food by relatives and visitors who don't know any better. At East Valley Emergency in Diamond Bar, CA, we understand that this happens a lot at this time of year. We want all our pet owners to know what over indulgence can be dangerous or even fatal for pets. It's important to understand the dangers of pet over indulgence so you can help keep your pet safe at the holidays.

Pet Over Indulgence Can Cause Pancreatitis

The pancreas controls blood sugar levels in the body and produces enzymes that help the body absorb nutrients. Sometimes when animals eat diets rich in fatty foods, the pancreas can become inflamed or shut down entirely, disrupting the digestive cycle and resulting in a variety of symptoms that include:

  • Vomiting
  • Decreased appetite
  • Abdominal discomfort

Sometimes pancreatitis can be accompanied by secondary problems that can be life threatening, like kidney failure and respiratory distress. Pancreatitis must be resolved on its own, but pets that experience this problem are taken to the emergency pet clinic and are given IV fluids and antibiotics.

Avoid Pancreatitis During the Holidays

You can avoid pancreatitis during the holidays by establishing firm rules regarding the food your pet is allowed to eat and by strictly controlling your pet's diet. Do not allow your pet to be fed human food, and do not allow your pet to be fed from the dinner table. Prevent your pet from digging through the garbage and eating food that has been thrown away.

If your pet does start to display symptoms of pancreatitis, contact our emergency pet clinic in Diamond Bar right away. Having the phone number for an emergency hospital on hand can help save your pet's life in a time of distress. For more information, contact East Valley Emergency Pet Clinic.
