Preventing health problems before they start is one of the best steps you can take for your pet, and that holds especially true when it comes to parasites. Unfortunately, there are a variety of parasites that can infect cats and dogs, causing a range of symptoms, pain, and sometimes even threaten your pet’s life. The good news is that there are a number of preventative care strategies you can utilize to help protect your pet, all the way from a pet wellness exam to medication featured at East Valley Emergency Pet Clinic

Parasites That Threaten Your Pet

It’s important to familiarize yourself with a variety of parasitic threats that exist. Here are some of the main ones and symptoms to watch out for:

Heartworm

Heartworm is a common parasitic infection that can affect both cats and dogs. However, dogs tend to have a more severe reaction from it. The parasite is spread through the bite of the mosquito and has now been reported in all 50 states for pets, but it’s a special threat where mosquito populations are high.

Once the parasite travels to the blood vessels in the heart and lungs, symptoms may take a while to appear. However, eventually a chronic cough, fatigue, vomiting and sudden weight loss will occur. If the parasite isn’t killed, it can eventually cause death.

Heartworm prevention can be achieved with a variety of medications, including a monthly medication or even an injection that is good for six months available at your Diamond Bar animal hospital

Fleas and Ticks

Fleas and ticks are parasites that feed on blood. They not only cause skin problems, but also harbor a variety of diseases. The good news is that your East Valley Emergency Pet Clinic vet has a variety of safe and effective products that can stop fleas from spreading, kill fleas, and also prevent flea infestations. Similar products are also available for ticks. Your vet can also discuss strategies for helping you prevent your animals from coming contact with these parasites and what threats they present.

Intestinal Parasites

There are a variety of intestinal parasites that are present in both cats and dogs. These parasites include the following:

  • Tapeworms

  • Hookworms

  • Roundworms

  • Whipworms

  • Coccidia

These organisms can cause severe illness for your pet. Symptoms usually include diarrhea, vomiting, weight loss, fatigue, and signs of stomach pain. These organisms can be present in your pet’s body for a while before symptoms begin to appear. You should also be aware that certain parasites like hookworms and roundworms  are actually zoonotic, which simply means that they also infect humans.

Screening and prevention are essential. Often, there will be no sign in your pet’s feces that they are infected and you might not catch symptoms fast enough. That’s why the Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) recommends fecal analysis for the first year of a pet’s life to be performed 2 to 4 times and 1 to 2 times per year for adult pets. We can help perform a microscopic analysis of your pet’s waste to discover and identify any parasites that exist.

There are a variety of medications your pet can take on a monthly basis throughout the year to prevent these parasites from infecting your pet in the first place. However, deworming strategies are also effective once parasites are found.
