Vaccination is a crucial aspect of pet wellness care. It will help you to avoid rushing your pet to the emergency room at our Diamond Bar animal hospital. Although we are an emergency animal hospital, East Valley is also a preventative and primary care facility.

East Valley Emergency Pet Clinic in Diamond Bar, CA, offers a full range of routine but essential pet care. This includes a pet physical exam, parasite prevention and vaccinations.

Regarding vaccinations, making sure your pet's shots are updated on schedule prevents life-threatening emergencies.

Pet Vaccinations

A disease organism that is killed or weakened is the basis of a pet vaccine. Its injection builds immunity against the disease. Regularly scheduled shots that protect against major illnesses are referred to as "core" vaccinations. Non-core types prevent illnesses particular to a pet's lifestyle or the region where you live.

Standard vaccinations for both dogs and cats include the rabies shot, which is mandated by law and protects against a form of encephalitis that kills pets and may be deadly to people they bite.

Dog core vaccinations. Dogs also need shots for distemper (a nervous system infection), hepatitis (adenovirus), parvovirus (an intestinal problem) and parainfluenza (a type of kennel cough). All of these may be put together in single vaccination referred to as "DHPP."

Cat core vaccinations. One major shot cats need protects against feline distemper, which afflicts digestion and other body systems. Others include vaccinations for the upper respiratory illnesses rhinotracheitis and calicivirus. Sometimes all of these vaccines are combined in a single shot called "FVRCP."

Non-core vaccinations. Bordetella is one of the main non-core vaccinations. It is for dogs and cats that spend time in pet daycare or are kenneled when owners need to be away on vacations or business trips. Bordetella is the chief respiratory problem called "kennel cough," but isn't a deadly ailment. Vaccination for tick-borne Lyme disease is another non-core example.

Vaccination Schedule & Side Effects

Not all vaccines last the same amount of time. Depending on the vaccine, the timing of booster shots may be less than a year, once a year or -- as in the case of the rabies shot -- two years or more.

You may need to plan on extra cuddle time on vaccination days, because your pet may experience some fatigue, reduced appetite or a little soreness at the point of injection.

Diamond Bar Animal Hospital Hours

Due to our mission as an after-hours emergency care provider, East Valley's schedule is the opposite of most veterinary hospitals. On weekdays, we are open from evening through early morning. Saturday and Sunday, you will find us here round the clock. This works well for pet owners with unusual work schedules.

Please call us at (909) 861-5737 or contact us by email for an appointment. Of course, if your pet has an emergency, please come in immediately. Just give us a quick call, and we will prepare for your visit.
